Nursing
Overview:
Students step into a clinic setting and follow a nurse meeting a patient for the first time. The focus is on how nurses create a sense of safety, trust, and understanding from the very beginning of an interaction.
What students explore:
- how nurses use communication and body language
- how they adjust their approach based on the patient
- how small actions influence a patient’s comfort and confidence
The student project :
Students identify and explain the specific actions the nurse takes to support the patient, focusing on observable behaviours (e.g. tone, positioning, language). They reflect on what “good care” looks like in a first interaction.
Overview:
Students step into an emergency department and follow a team responding to a patient in a high-pressure situation. This project highlights the fast-paced, unpredictable nature of emergency nursing.
What students explore:
- how nurses assess and respond quickly to patient needs
- how communication and teamwork support safe care
- how nurses balance urgency with keeping patients calm and informed
The student project:
Students complete a podcast-style reflection where they:
- describe what they observed the nurse and team doing
- explain how decisions were made in real time
- identify how communication supported both the patient and the team
Overview:
Students step into the role of a community nurse, supporting a patient at home alongside Nurse Kirra. They follow a full visit — from preparing for the day to delivering care and supporting recovery — with a focus on independence, safety, and real-life environments.
What students explore:
- how nurses prepare for visits using patient notes and planning
- how care is delivered in the home, including building trust and spotting risks
- how the home environment impacts safety and recovery
- how nurses work with a wider care team to support ongoing care
- how communication and handover notes keep care consistent
The student project:
Students complete a Nurse Note (handover) that outlines what good care looks like, including:
- key risks identified in the home
- actions to support recovery and independence
- who in the care team supports each action
- conversation starters to build trust with the patient
Overview:
Students explore how nurses deliver care that fits the person, not just their health needs, across different community and clinical settings.
What students explore:
• how care is shaped around the individual’s needs, preferences, and context
• how nurses adapt communication, pace, and environment
• how different settings impact care delivery
• how trust and comfort influence care outcomes

Students create a care map that shows what effective, person-centred care looks like, including:• actions the nurse takes

Students explore the different ways to become a nurse and how a nursing career can grow over time. They learn about the variety of roles, settings, and opportunities available across rural and regional South Australia.

Midwifery
Overview:
Students follow a woman’s early pregnancy experience and observe how a midwife creates a safe, respectful, and culturally responsive environment from the first appointment.
What students explore:
- how midwives build trust through communication and listening
- how care is shaped by a woman’s preferences, culture, and identity
- how the physical space supports comfort and connection
The project ask:
Students identify key moments of care and create a simple care map that outlines:
- what the midwife and team do
- how the space supports the woman
- how care is personalised to her needs
Students focus on observable actions, not general ideas.
Overview:
Students follow the process of developing a birth plan, seeing how midwives work in partnership with the woman to prepare for labour, with a focus on culturally responsive, person-centred care.
What students explore:
- how midwives support informed choice and decision-making
- how birth plans reflect what matters to the woman, including cultural needs and preferences
- how care is adapted to be culturally safe and respectful
- how the care team collaborates and prepares
The student project:
Students build a care map that shows what good care looks like for the woman during birth planning.
They identify:
- what the team puts in place
- how decisions are made
- how the woman is supported to feel confident, respected, and prepared
Overview:
Students step into the birthing suite and follow a woman through labour, observing how the midwife supports her through changing and intense moments.
What students explore:
- how midwives provide calm, steady support during labour
- how they respond when the birth plan changes
- how the environment is adjusted to support comfort and safety
- how communication supports both the woman and her support person
The student project:
Students complete a podcast-style reflection where they:
- describe what they observed the midwife doing during labour
- explain how care adapted as the situation changed
- identify small but meaningful actions that supported the woman and her partner
Students are encouraged to use specific examples from the experience rather than general opinions.
Overview:
Students follow what happens after the baby arrives, stepping into the role of a midwife as care continues beyond the hospital.
Through a real-world scenario, they see how support for the woman, baby, and family plays out in everyday settings — and how midwives adapt their approach to what’s in front of them.
What students explore:
- how care continues after birth in real-life environments
- how midwives support both the woman and baby during this stage
- how different settings and circumstances shape the care provided
- how support extends beyond one person to a wider care network
The student project:
Students bring together what they’ve seen to complete a handover observation log, capturing what matters so the next health professional can continue care without starting from scratch.
They identify:
- what support is needed after birth
- how the environment influences care
- what should be noticed and passed on to support ongoing care
- what helps the woman feel supported, confident, and safe
